Soroptimist International (SI) was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California. It is a global volunteer movement and consists of a network of 66,000 members in 120 countries. Advocating for human rights and gender equality, we have 7 UN centres where Representatives from SI ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard. Members work on grassroots projects at local, national, and international levels to Educate, Empower and Enable opportunities for women and girls. Our projects are also closely aligned with the 17 UN SDGs.
In Malaysia, we have 17 Soroptimist clubs under SI International Region of Malaysia (SIROM) and over the past 30 years we have carried out several projects to help the poor and needy in the fields of Education, Health, Environment, Economic and Social Development, and Skills Training. Our members are a remarkable group of women from different professional backgrounds, who are committed to transforming the lives of women and girls so that they can achieve their full potential.
Since 2018, SIROM partnered with Heineken Malaysia and Spark Foundation, establishing gravity-fed clean water systems and organic farms in Kg Gana, Kota Marudu, Sabah, and Kg Long Tanyit, Belaga District, Sarawak. In 2021/2022, we rebuilt the Kg Long Tanyit farm after floods with Heineken's support and conducted Flood Risk Reduction, Farming, and Marketing workshops for village women. In 2021-2022, we set up clean water systems in 3 Orang Asli villages in Peninsula Malaysia, empowering women, impacting entire communities, and addressing multiple SDGs. Now, we aim to extend our impact to Kg Sg Lebak, collaborating with Good Growers PLT to train 10 Orang Asli families in integrated farming, promoting entrepreneurship, and ensuring food security.
Join Sokong today and together let's empower giving and elevate impact for a better tomorrow.
