A Year of Strength and Hope: WCC Penang’s 2024 Journey

Human Rights
Youth & Children

At Sokong, we believe that change starts with action, and Women’s Centre for Change (WCC) Penang has been at the forefront of this movement for nearly four decades. Their tireless work in protecting women and children from violence, educating communities, and advocating for systemic change continues to inspire us. As we reflect on their 2024 journey, we invite you to be part of their mission and help them continue transforming lives in 2025.

A Call for Help, A Lifeline Given

Every call to WCC Penang represents a life seeking hope and safety. In 2024, WCC’s hotline and in-person services reached 1,500 women and children, offering them support in their darkest times. One survivor shared:

“I found myself again after this counseling sessions. I found peace in myself. Thank you for helping me to find myself.”

Through collaboration with six government hospitals, WCC helped 300 survivors of domestic and sexual violence receive the urgent care they needed. But their support doesn’t stop there. With 120 medical personnel trained in victim-friendly care, and 150 government officers and community leaders educated on domestic violence, WCC is shaping a more informed and compassionate society.

“At WCC, we see firsthand how crucial immediate support and long-term advocacy are for survivors. Every person we help reinforces our commitment to creating a safer world for women and children.” – Lau Swee Li, Senior Social Worker

Education: The First Line of Defense

WCC Penang believes that knowledge is the strongest shield against abuse. That’s why in 2024, they focused on empowering the next generation:

  • 7,700 children across 67 schools were taught body safety, helping them recognise and report unsafe situations.

  • 2,700 teenagers learned how to stay safe online, protecting themselves from digital threats.

  • 170 teachers received specialised training to handle online child sexual abuse cases, ensuring schools remain a safe space for students.

These efforts are shaping a future where children grow up empowered, protected, and aware of their rights.

“Prevention is the key to ending abuse. By equipping children and educators with the right knowledge, we are creating a safer future for the next generation.” – Yeap Yen Ying, Community Outreach Lead

Sustaining Change Through Community Support

Beyond direct intervention and education, WCC Penang has built a sustainable way to fund its work: the WCC Value Shop. Located in Island Plaza, this thrift store is more than just a place to shop—it’s a movement. Managed by passionate volunteers, every purchase made contributes to WCC’s mission.

By choosing to shop with purpose, customers help keep essential programs running and ensure that more survivors receive the support they deserve.

The Power of Collective Action

Since 1985, WCC Penang has positively impacted over 200,000 lives. Their work is far from over, and they need your help to continue making a difference.

“We have come so far, but there is still so much to do. With the support of our community, we can continue fighting for the rights and safety of women and children.” – Loh Cheng Kooi, Executive Director

Your support—whether through a donation, volunteering, or spreading awareness—keeps this mission alive.
