Established in 2018, RIMAU's core mission is the conservation of the Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni), an iconic national symbol exclusive to Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. Once a thriving population with an estimated 3,000 individuals in our rainforests during the 1950s, the latest findings from the National Tiger Survey (2020) alarmingly reveal that less than 150 of these majestic animals remain in the wild. While habitat loss remains a significant contributor to this decline, the primary and most pressing threat today is poaching.
RIMAU works with local indigenous communities across three tiger habitat and landscapes in Perak by setting up community patrol units to patrol forests whilst providing them a livelihood. We believe that the involvement of local communities is crucial in safeguarding the natural resources that surround the place they call home.
Your support will help us go a long way to pay salaries, train, equip and insure our growing team. RIMAU also contributes towards the early education programme in Royal Belum State Park by facilitating classes for local indigenous children. We welcome you to join us in protecting the Malayan Tiger for our future generations.
